The Analog Coalition
The Analog Coalition is a 5249 mile collaboration between Austin’s Glenn Kirchner of Zurückspulen and Stockholm, Sweden’s Tony Hartley of Spectromatix. Though the two have never met face-to-face, their synthpop will have you believing these two analog synthesizer junkies grew up together. The duo have been posting their work on Soundcloud and are slowly working their way towards releasing, what should be a first-rate synthpop album.
Glenn and Tony are full-time members of Zurückspulen and Spectromatix, respectively. Zurückspulen had just released their second album, Backtrack in 2014 when Tony, an electronic music composer & producer from the UK living in Sweden, contacted Glenn about collaborating on some music.
Glenn mentioned to me that he was a bit intimidated after listening to some of Spectromatix’s songs, and understandably so. Tony started singing at a very young age, he attended Worthing Theater School and is a trained musical theater singer and actor. He has been in numerous bands as lead or backing singer. He is a self taught composer, sound engineer, and singer.
Started to work with music in the 80’s, Tony designed many audio engines and tool chains used by music producers for early video games. His systems were used in games such as Terminator 1, Terminator 2, The Alien Trilogy, and Activision Asteroids (Deluxe). It was during this time he came into contact with many musicians and producers, learning production and composition. He has also written synth software for the Roland S50 & W30 samplers and spent time as a Fairlight CMI Operator (II and IIx).
After completing their first song together as The Analog Coalition, Glenn was so moved by Tony’s vocals and impressed with how much he had learned about music production that the two have been making music ever since.
“I learned more about sound in a couple of months working with Tony, than I ever had,” says Glenn, “and I have been playing around with synthesizers since the 80s. I still feel anxious working with someone of his caliber, but who in their right mind would turn down the opportunity to learn from and work with a true master.”
