Austin’s dynamic synth programmers, Zurückspulen have been tearing it up again.

This time by remixing the renowned, Morgan King‘s hit song, “Alien”. King is a Grammy award winning, English singer, writer, and record producer who got his start as one of the original artists on the futuristic, “Some Bizzare Album”, of 1981, with the band Illustration.

Released by Accidental Music on February 2nd, King’s Alien Remixes have been making waves back in the UK. To get you on your feet, check out the Zurückspulen’s “Xenophone Remix” of Alien. Also included are two remixes by Dutch phenom, Phuzz.

I spoke with Zurückspulen’s Glenn Kirchner about the decision to deviate from their 80’s style synthpop to make a remix for Morgan King.

“It was a no brainer”, Kirchner replied. Having moved so many times throughout his childhood, the lyrics to “Alien” resonated with him. “I grew up experiencing much of the angst that is conveyed in the song”, he went on to say. Also, quite coincidentally, as a teenager in Mexico City, one of his favorite albums was the aforementioned
“Some Bizzare Album”, which featured Morgan King.

The “Some Bizzare Album” was a compilation album that gave rise to many of bands that influenced Kirchner, such as Depeche Mode, B-Movie, Soft Cell, Blancmange, The The, and Naked Lunch. For Kirchner, this was a type of homecoming. It was a way of becoming a part of the album that had shaped his style.

In fact, Kirchner mentioned that a B-Movie remix is in the works. “This brings me about 40 years closer to the album that was 50 years ahead of its time.”
